Les Deux Clavecins
The Shaffer-Marshall Harpsichord Duo

Sunday, October 21, 2007, 4:00 p.m.

Les Deux ClavecinsLes Deux Calvecins was formed in January 1992 for a special concert of music by The Sons of Bach for the Norfolk Chamber Consort, Norfolk, Virginia.  Their performance was so successful that the two musicians decided to form a duo and continue to appear as Les Deux Clavecins (two harpsichords).  Since then they have made numerous appearances throughout Virginia, especially at the Governor’s Palace and the Capitol of Colonial Williamsburg, as well as in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.

Dr. Allen Shaffer was principal keyboard player for fifteen years with the Virginia Symphony.  He is an associate of the American Guild of Organists and was three times dean of the AGO’s Tidewater Chapter.  He recently retired as professor of music from Norfolk State University after twenty seven years.  He holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Syracuse University, and the University of Michigan.  He also studied at the famed Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.

Thomas Marshall, a native of Yorktown, Virginia, was educated at James Madison University in Harrisonburg and the University of Michigan and has been a member of the musical performance staff of The Governor’s Musick at Colonial Williamsburg for over two decades.  There he has been able to play and study the unique and impressive collection of English harpsichords, organs, and fortepianos in developing imaginative and stylistic performances of early music.

The concert is open to the public. A free-will offering will be received and a reception will follow the concert.
