Norfolk State University’s Concert Choir is known for the beauty of its choral tones and ability to render exemplary performances of choral works of the great masters.
Under the direction of Dr. Carl Haywood, the choir has performed at Oberlin College, Ohio, New York University and Saint Thomas Church in the City of New York, and the Washington National Cathedral, Washington, D. C.
Haywood, a native of Portsmouth, is a cum laude graduate of Norfolk State University. He is a recipient of the Master of Sacred Music (organ) and Master of Music (choral conducting) degrees from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX. Haywood earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, Ca. in 1976.
Haywood serves as a clinician, adjudicator, guest conductor, and lecturer for schools, colleges, and churches throughout the nation. He is the organist and choir director at Grace Episcopal Church, Norfolk and has served on various commissions for the Episcopal Church in America and the Diocese of Southern Virginia.
The concert is open to the public. A free-will offering will be received and a reception will follow the concert.
