The Slide Factory Trombone Quartet is comprised of Clyde Gumbert, Chris Wyatt, Dave Anson and Don Wilmot. The group plays music from the Baroque, Renaissance, Classical, Romantic, dixieland and jazz to modern composers and church settings. Trombones have long been used to create a somber, yet pleasingly sonorous mood with their tones in the male vocal range. Today’s trombone is a multi-faceted instrument capable of creating excitement, fun and an atmosphere of regal contemplation.
Clyde Gumbert,1st Trombone was a research engineer at NASA Langley Research Center for 32 years. He started taking lessons on a baritone horn in 4th grade because he was too small to carry his father's trombone to school. Fortunately, Clyde grew and is able to carry his own trombone. He played with many community bands, community orchestras, and community theater orchestras in Hampton Roads. He currently plays with the Sound of Swing Band, the Tidewater Trombone Choir, the Newport Brass Quintet, and Slide Factory. He has enjoyed stints with the Sauerkraut Symphony, Salsa 90, Freesilver, and the Williamsburg Music Theater.
Chris Wyatt, 2nd Trombone has been a music educator for 10 years, and now educates teachers on the use of technology in the classroom for Hampton City Schools. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois. He studied trombone from Mike Wheeler and Elliot Chasanov. He teaches privately and continues to enjoy sharing and teaching music to others.
Dave Anson, 3rd Trombone retired as Band Director at Menchville High School and was Band Director at Hampton High School. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education from the University of Charleston and a Master of Music in Trombone Performance from Catholic University. He has served 12 years with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, three years with the Virginia Opera Orchestra, ten years with the United States Air Force Band, Langley Air Force Base, Hampton, Va., and one year with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
Don Wilmot, Bass trombone is a retired United States Army trombonist with more than 30 years playing experience. He currently performs with the Tidewater Winds, Busch Gardens Tuba Quartet, Tidewater Trombone Choir and various local rehearsal big bands. Since retirement, he has performed with the University of Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra, the Georgia Brass Band, the Cobb Symphony Orchestra, and several community wind ensembles. While in the Army, he performed more than 1000 concerts in 300 cities in 44 states and backed up such luminaries as Cab Calloway, Bill Watrous, Roy Haines, Louis Bellson, and others. He teaches private brass lessons and travels with his active duty wife and flutist, Darla.
The concert is opened to the public. A free-will offering will be received. A reception will follow the concert.
